Starting at the age of 13, Gowan studied under a European Goldsmith participating in a traditional apprenticeship. Upon the completion of her apprenticeship, she participated in extensive academic coursework on metalworking, completed a residency in a world famous art center, and additionally studied Lapidary Science (stone cutting). She has worked as a production jeweler, an instructor of metalworking techniques, and done many commission projects. Gowan works predominantly with traditional Etruscan Goldsmithing methods, as well as Traditional Silversmithing and modern blacksmithing and copperworking methods. Gowan works primarily with gold and silver using traditional hand-tools (torches, handsaws, hammers, anvils and files), and uses modern motorized implements only for finishing work. After growing up in the deep woods of Northern California, and spending an unpleasant period in Oakland, she currently resides in Portland Oregon, where she raises snakes when she is not making pretty things.
